A Study on the Qualitative Characteristics of Primary School Turkish

Abstract

Dictionaries in primary school Turkish lessons are frequently used educational environments. The development of children's vocabulary is among the main objectives of the Turkish language course. School dictionaries used to achieve this purpose should carry educational qualifications. It is possible to divide the qualities that the dictionaries need to carry out into content properties and formal properties. The formal characteristics of the dictionaries; can be portable, paper quality, font, point size and so on. it affects usability. The adequacy of the dictionaries in terms of content and scope depends on the features such as the possession of possible words (conformity), identification features, and knowledge of origin. In this study, it was examined how the words selected from the secondary school Turkish textbooks were identified as headings in four different junior high school Turkish dictionaries, and it was evaluated whether the item definitions were compared with the definitions in TDK Great Turkish Dictionary and whether they had an educational point of view. As a result of the study, it was determined that the dictionaries used the same definition, deletion and extension methods as TDK Turkish Dictionary. As a result of the research; the dictionary is inadequate visually, the font size is small, the paper quality is low, the cross-transmission rate is low, and most importantly, the item head explanations are inadequate. Among the positive features of the dictionaries are the ability to be portable, the writing of the headings in dark or different colors, and the provision of the word line alongside the headings of the items.
