The Use of Artificial Intelligence in the Context of Learner Support Services in Open and Distance Learning Systems

Abstract

In order to carry out the learning process efficiently in open and distance learning (ODL) environments, the system is expected to provide effective support services which can meet learner needs. Thanks to artificial intelligence technologies and their applications in the field of education, it is possible to offer these services in ODL environments in a more effective and sustainable way. In this regard, the aim of this study was to examine how artificial intelligence technology could be used within the scope of learner support services in ODL environments. For this purpose, the support services were discussed under five categories; academic support, administrative support, counseling support, technical support and library support. In the research, traditional literature review was adapted, and a holistic perspective was presented in the context of support services by examining existing studies and applications. Academic support, which is directly related to the learning process and the learning experience of the learner, has a very significant concern in the scope of artificial intelligence technologies and the facilities it provides. However, high numbers of learners and the diversity seen in the individual expectations and the needs of learners make it harder to offer personalized and timely feedback in the learning process, and therefore the use of artificial intelligence in academic support services as well as other support services in ODL is crucial. In the current research, the following recommendations are put forward for future studies, a) conducting practical studies on the efficiency of artificial intelligence integrated support systems in ODL, b) examining the effectiveness of each support services in detail, and c) establishing institutional frameworks in the context of technology.
